league s best possession teams over the past six seasons
The Los Angeles Kings hired former NHL star Pierre Turgeon last summer and gave him the NFL style title of offensive coordinator.

But they could have just as easily called him the coordinator of creative thinking. He’s in charge of coloring outside the lines, and inspiring others to do the same.

“He sees the game differently than other coaches ,” Kings captain Anze Kopitar said. “He gives you his perspective. You give him yours. And it becomes a discussion. He https://www.kingslafans.com/tyler-toffol...-c-12.html gives you ideas of what is open and what isn’t ... but it’s almost a two way street more than just coaching us.”

The Kings, who have been among the league s best possession teams over the past six seasons, have not generated offense the same way. They ranked 25th in scoring last season with an average of 2.43 goals per game en route to missing the playoffs.

The organization brought in Turgeon, 48, to teach the players how to create offense like he did when he netted 515 NHL goals in his career from 1987 2007. Turgeon Michael Cammalleri Jersey once scored 58 goals in a season, and he always seemed to have the ability to create something out of nothing.

“He can provide a lot of insight to coaches and players on not what he thinks will work, but what he knows will work because he was successful as a player,” Kings coach John Stevens said.

The Kings say Turgeon’s contributions are helping, and the Kings’ offense has improved to 2.84 goals per game. It’s difficult to know precisely how much Turgeon has helped because his work is part of new coach Stevens’ overall effort to improve the team’s offensive production. That was Stevens pledge when he was chosen to replace Darryl Sutter as coach.

The team’s 16.8 increase in scoring might be even higher if 2016 17 leading goal scorer Jeff Carter hadn’t been injured six games into the season.

“I really felt like it was a good fit to come back to the game and try this,” said Turgeon, who played for six NHL teams. I’m having fun, and at the same time, we are creating some ideas.”

Another reason the 14 8 3 Kings, second in the Pacific Division, wanted Turgeon was that a vibrant personality adds a positive tone to any dressing room.

“He has an encouraging presence,” Kopitar said. “He’s fun. I enjoy working with him.”

In the NFL, most offensive coordinators call the plays. Turgeon tracks the Kings’ offensive opportunities, analyzes faceoffs and works with goalie coach Bill Ranford to improve the team’s shootout performances. He also studies the Kings’ net front presence to see how it can be improved.

“He has had a big focus on the trends of the offensive side of the game,” Stevens said. “Things that we like and things we can do better ... like how we can use the area behind the net to do more.”

Stevens said Turgeon has a “lot of energy all of the time.”

Turgeon said he has had a learning curve because technology has advanced dramatically since he was in in the NHL.

“Early in my career it was VHS,” Turgeon said, laughing. “Now you push one button, you can see someone’s shift from two weeks ago. It’s a different deal.”

Turgeon had been away from the game for 10 years since he retired. He has spent that time coaching his children in hockey. His son, Dominic, a Detroit Red Wings prospect https://www.kingslafans.com/nick-shore-jersey-c-13.html, is playing in the American Hockey League with Grand Rapids Mich. . His daughter, Val, is playing college hockey at Harvard.

“When I retired, I wanted it to be about the kids ,” Turgeon said. “I loved being with my kids. But then all of sudden, the kids were gone, and my wife and I said, What are we doing now? ”

Turgeon said he has missed the NHL since he retired, and it has been exhilarating to be back. A half hour after the first player leaves practice, Turgeon will still be out there working with a different player.

“I love being around the boys https://www.kingslafans.com/tanner-pears...-c-14.html,” he said. “I love being at the rink. I love practicing.“

He paused. “Do you know what I missed the most?” Turgeon said. “The ice. I missed being on the ice.”
